UniVoice - Service Provider vs. CPE

Service Provider Unified Messaging:

The Benefits

  • Less up-front cost in purchasing hardware and software.
  • Email is being outsourced, why not voice and fax as well. In fact, The Gartner Group predicts that 40% of companies with outsource some portion of their email over the next two years - UM is a natural extension this.
  • A service provider model allows users to stay up-to-date with new features in a timelier manner.
  • Single-user customers and small offices will find this better fits their needs.
  • Set up and implementation time are greatly reduced.
  • No need to hire additional staff to manage the UM system.
  • Greater scalability. With a service provider, a customer would conceivably never run into an issue of scalability.

Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) Unified Messaging:

The Benefits

  • More flexible than a service provider offering. The customer has much more control about which features he wants deployed, how long messages will be stored, message presentation, etc.
  • More reliable than a service provider offering. Before customers implement a service provider offering they must be convinced and trust that it is as good as what they have in-house. These are mission-critical applications.
  • Greater ability for back-up and restore functions. An executive needs a message that he deleted a week ago? Get out the backup and restore the message. You won't find that available from a service provider.
  • Greater integration with a company's existing infrastructure. A successful UM solution must integrate with existing email, fax servers, telephone system, databases, etc. This is more easily done in a premise-based solution.
  • Greater security. Messages contain confidential information. That information must be secure. There is always a greater risk once you store that information outside a customer's premise.
